The Actually-Useful Baby Registry Checklist
Quick answer
A newborn needs somewhere safe to sleep, a properly installed car seat, a way to be fed, nappies, a few clothes, and people who love them. Everything else is convenience. Register generously โ people want to give โ but front-load the things you will use in the first eight weeks and let the rest wait until you know what kind of baby you got.
The simple explanation
Registries go wrong in two directions. Either you register for almost nothing and end up buying it all yourself at 2am, or you register for a 200-item list and open a fourth wipe warmer at your shower.
The useful middle: cover the essentials properly, add a handful of genuinely nice-to-haves, and include a few larger items or experiences that friends can group-gift. Babies are also aggressively individual โ the swaddle that saves one family is the one another family's baby escapes in eleven seconds. Buy one of a thing before you buy six.
The genuine essentials
Sleep
- A crib, bassinet, or play yard with a firm, flat mattress that fits snugly
- Fitted sheets โ 3 or 4 (you will change these at inconvenient hours)
- Waterproof mattress protectors โ 2
- Swaddles or sleep sacks โ a few, in different styles until you find the one
Safe sleep means baby on their back, on a firm flat surface, with nothing else in the sleep space. Skip the crib bumpers, loose blankets, pillows, and inclined sleepers โ those are not just unnecessary, they are unsafe. Your paediatrician will go through this with you.
Travel
- An infant car seat โ buy new, and check the expiry date
- A stroller that works with your car seat, or a travel system
- A carrier or wrap โ worth trying on before committing
Car seats are the one category where secondhand is a genuine no. You cannot see crash history or material fatigue, and they expire. Get your installation checked โ many Hampton Roads fire departments and hospitals offer free car seat checks.
Feeding
- Bottles โ start with 2 or 3 of one brand before buying a full set
- If breastfeeding: nursing bras, nipple cream, breast pads, a pump (check what your insurance covers)
- If formula feeding: bottle brush, drying rack, formula pitcher or dispenser
- Burp cloths โ more than you think, around 10
- Bibs, once solids arrive (not needed day one)
Nappies & changing
- Newborn nappies โ one pack only, plus sizes 1 and 2 (babies outgrow newborn size fast, sometimes immediately)
- Wipes โ register in bulk, this one you cannot overdo
- A changing pad and a couple of covers
- Nappy cream
- A lined bin you do not mind emptying
Clothing (0โ3 months)
- Bodysuits โ 7 to 10
- Footed sleepers โ 7 to 10 (zips, not snaps, at 3am)
- Socks or booties, 2 hats, 2 pairs of scratch mittens
- A weather-appropriate outer layer โ remember Hampton Roads summers are humid and winters are damp
- 2 or 3 swaddle-weight muslin blankets
Health & bath
- Digital thermometer
- Nasal aspirator
- Baby nail clippers or file
- Infant tub or sink insert, 2 hooded towels, a few washcloths
- Fragrance-free baby wash
Worth having, not essential on day one
- A white noise machine โ genuinely earns its place for many families
- A bouncer or swing, for the ten minutes you need both hands
- A play mat
- A second changing station upstairs if you have stairs
- A nightlight and a comfortable feeding chair
- Blackout curtains
Things people regret registering for
- Wipe warmers
- Nappy-specific disposal systems with expensive refill cartridges
- Full bedding sets โ the decorative parts cannot safely go in the crib
- Newborn shoes
- Large quantities of newborn-size clothing
- Bottle sets of eight before you know which teat your baby accepts
Group gifts and experiences
Not every registry item has to be an object. Families increasingly add experiences and services, which tend to be the most appreciated gifts of all:
- Meal delivery for the first two weeks home
- A postpartum doula or night support
- A newborn photography session
- Lactation consultant visits
- A 3D/4D ultrasound session or gift certificate โ grandparents love giving this one
- House cleaning for the first month

What parents may experience
- You will get things you did not register for. Keep receipts, return without guilt, and pass along what you cannot use.
- Your shower may be before you have decided anything. Register early and edit later โ most registries let you add and remove right up to the date.
- Second-time parents need less than expected. Bottles, nappies, and a fresh car seat if the old one has expired. Most of the rest carries over.
- Military families move mid-pregnancy. If PCS orders are looming, register light and prioritise what fits in the car. Ask us about the For Families Who Serve sessions if timing is tight.
- The nesting urge peaks around 30โ35 weeks. Plan to have the car seat installed and the sleep space assembled by about 36 weeks so you are not doing it in a hurry.
When to contact your healthcare provider
- Before choosing feeding equipment, if you have questions about breastfeeding or your milk supply
- For guidance on safe sleep โ your paediatrician or provider is the authority here
- If you are unsure whether a product is safe or has been recalled
- If preparing for baby is bringing on anxiety that feels hard to manage โ this is worth mentioning, and it is common
This checklist is general guidance only. Follow your paediatrician's and provider's recommendations, and check current product safety notices before purchasing.
๐ Preparing for baby? Come meet them first.
Between the checklists and the assembly instructions, it is easy to forget the part you will actually remember. A 3D/4D session is thirty minutes of just looking at your baby โ and the lounge seats 10+, so the people helping you prepare can come too.
